Other Activity: CHIkids and childcare
(Also available Sunday, Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday)

There are two options: the traditional child care option and CHIkids. CHIkids is a place where kids, adults, and technology come together with common goals and do meaningful things.

The philosophy of the CHIkids program is built around the belief that technology is a tool to learning. CHIkids is about what can happen when technology is a catalyst. With the tools of technology, children can be conference reporters, web designers, multimedia storytellers, software testers, conference attendees, and more!

The innovative CHIkids program has been expanded for CHI 99. CHIkids combines the feeling of summer camp with the fun of technology, all as a part of the unique conference experience. This year's CHIkids program will provide kids with new extended opportunities for meaningful technology experiences.

  • The traditional child care option offers children 6 months to 3 years, fun-filled, developmentally appropriate activities.
  • CHIkids provides children 3 to 15 years of age with educational, purpose-driven technology experiences. Children ages 3 to 7 will use CD-ROMs, test new software, as well as be provided with a mixture of off-computer activities to complement their technology experiences. Children ages 8 to 15 will be provided with two main areas of exploration: creating multimedia stories in the Multimedia Storytelling area and being conference reporters using desktop publishing tools and the web in the CHIkids Newsroom.

All CHIkids activities will be led by a team of CHI volunteers with experience in technology, kids, and fun! Assistance will be provided by KiddieCorp, our experienced child care facilitators. Each day, children will be able to choose among various activities. The registration fee is US$75 per day, and includes lunch, snack, and CHIkids T-shirt. An optional field trip will be offered for CHIkids, 8 years or older, on Thursday, 20 May.

For more information, please contact KiddieCorp via email or phone. Space is limited, and there will be no on-site registration. Therefore, registration will be on a first-come, first-served basis. A waiting list will be formed if all spaces are filled. Waiting list registrants will be notified if space becomes available.

Interview: Organizational Limits to HCI
A Conversation with Don Norman and Janice Rohn

Why do organizations resist employing user-centered design methodologies? What forms does this resistance take? What can be done to avoid or overcome this resistance? Are any of the obstacles justified?

DON NORMAN is an executive consultant in human-centered design in the Nielsen Norman Group. He is former Vice President of Research at Apple Computer and Professor Emeritus of Cognitive Science, University of California, San Diego.

JANICE ROHN is Manager of Usability Labs and Services at Sun Microsystems and has been President of the Usability Professionals' Association. At a BayCHI program, Janice advocated the application of a user-centered design process to a company in order to achieve its user-centered design of HCI.

Plenary: Civil Rights in Cyberspace: How Online Free Speech Restrictions Will Inhibit Online Diversity

In the past two years, courts in a variety of landmark cases have affirmed strong free speech rights for the Internet. Despite these victories, lawmakers continue to try to squelch the speech-enhancing and democratizing aspects of the online medium through poorly crafted laws and policies.

For example, despite the U.S. Supreme Court's unanimous condemnation of the Communications Decency Act, the U.S. Congress recently passed the Child Online Protection Act (COPA), which again puts online speakers at risk of severe criminal penalties for communicating protected speech to adults. COPA does nothing to protect children. But, if not enjoined, it will impose insurmountable burdens on content providers that will devastate small and home-based online businesses, and will eliminate many valuable interactive forums.

In addition, regulators in many places are forcing adults and minors to use blocking software when they access the Internet at public libraries and schools. The software is an arbitrary censorship tool which blocks access to a wide variety of valuable educational, political, literary, and artistic sites on the Internet -- including resources on women's health and safer sex.

Ann Beeson is staff counsel at the ACLU, where she works as a litigator to promote and protect civil liberties in cyberspace. She is a primary architect of the landmark case in which the U.S. Supreme Court in 1997 declared the Communications Decency Act unconstitutional and affirmed free speech rights in cyberspace. She is now lead counsel in the challenge to the second attempt by the U.S. Congress to impose criminal sanctions on protected Internet speech.

The Los Angeles Times named Ms. Beeson one of six "Stars of the Internet" for her work in safeguarding free speech in cyberspace, and she has been profiled as an "Internet Newsmaker" by CNET.
