Other Activity: CHIkids and childcare
(Also available Sunday, Monday, Tuesday, and Thursday)

There are two options: the traditional child care option and CHIkids. CHIkids is a place where kids, adults, and technology come together with common goals and do meaningful things.

The philosophy of the CHIkids program is built around the belief that technology is a tool to learning. CHIkids is about what can happen when technology is a catalyst. With the tools of technology, children can be conference reporters, web designers, multimedia storytellers, software testers, conference attendees, and more!

The innovative CHIkids program has been expanded for CHI 99. CHIkids combines the feeling of summer camp with the fun of technology, all as a part of the unique conference experience. This year's CHIkids program will provide kids with new extended opportunities for meaningful technology experiences.

  • The traditional child care option offers children 6 months to 3 years, fun-filled, developmentally appropriate activities.
  • CHIkids provides children 3 to 15 years of age with educational, purpose-driven technology experiences. Children ages 3 to 7 will use CD-ROMs, test new software, as well as be provided with a mixture of off-computer activities to complement their technology experiences. Children ages 8 to 15 will be provided with two main areas of exploration: creating multimedia stories in the Multimedia Storytelling area and being conference reporters using desktop publishing tools and the web in the CHIkids Newsroom.

All CHIkids activities will be led by a team of CHI volunteers with experience in technology, kids, and fun! Assistance will be provided by KiddieCorp, our experienced child care facilitators. Each day, children will be able to choose among various activities. The registration fee is US$75 per day, and includes lunch, snack, and CHIkids T-shirt. An optional field trip will be offered for CHIkids, 8 years or older, on Thursday, 20 May.

For more information, please contact KiddieCorp via email or phone. Space is limited, and there will be no on-site registration. Therefore, registration will be on a first-come, first-served basis. A waiting list will be formed if all spaces are filled. Waiting list registrants will be notified if space becomes available.

A Conversation with Bill Buxton and Clifford Nass

What limits do humans impose on HCI? Are humans aware of these limits? What is keeping us from achieving greater benefit from technology?

BILL BUXTON is Chief Scientist at Alias/Wavefront Inc., as well as its parent company, Silicon Graphics, Inc. (SGI), and is an Associate Professor in the Department of Computer Science at the University of Toronto.

CLIFFORD NASS is an associate professor of communication at Stanford University, with appointments in Symbolic Systems, Sociology, and Science, Technology, and Society, and is co-director of the Social Responses to Communication Technology Project at Stanford University. He has published extensively, including The Media Equation: How People Treat Computers, Television, and New Media Like Real People and Places.

Plenary: How to Become an Internet Felon in Three Easy Steps
Barbara Simons

The ease with which digitized intellectual property can be duplicated, distributed, and accessed on the Internet has generated fear and misunderstanding of the net. These concerns have prompted legislation and regulations that could have the effect of restricting access to information and reducing privacy on the Internet.

The Internet has no national boundaries, and there is no international consensus on how to balance users' rights to privacy and users' rights to protection of their intellectual property. Legislation has been proposed throughout the world that could seriously affect the way that HCI professionals design and deliver interactive technologies.

Barbara Simons will describe some of the resulting potential dangers for HCI professionals and general users of the Internet. She will review current battles over copyright protections and privacy, and will describe how such laws could change the nature of our work.

Barbara Simons earned her Ph.D. in computer science from the University of California, Berkeley. She served as Senior Technology Advisor for IBM Global Services. Ms. Simons is a Fellow of ACM and of the American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS). She was elected president of ACM in 1998.

Ms. Simons is a winner of the 1998 EFF Pioneer Award. In 1995, CNET selected her as one of its 26 Internet "Visionaries"; in 1994 Open Computing named her as one of the top 100 women in computing; and in 1992 she was awarded the CPSR Norbert Wiener Award for Professional and Social Responsibility in Computing. Science Magazine featured her in a special edition on women in science in 1992.

What do we really know about the relative benefit of the design and evaluation methods we use? What methods offer new opportunities? What opportunities exist for improving senior HCI? How do we find the methodological guidance we need?

WAYNE GRAY is Associate Professor of Psychology and Fellow of the Krasnow Institute for Advanced Study, at George Mason University. He is currently head of the Human Factors and Applied Cognitive Program. His notable work at NYNEX's Science & Technology Center included the development and application of CPM-GOMS to telephone operator workstations.

BILL GAVER is a Senior Research Fellow at the Royal College of Art in London. He has worked on media spaces, affordances, and virtual physics at Apple Computer, Rank Xerox EuroPARC, and the Delft University of Technology. Now he is focusing on "provocative awareness," the use of technology for aesthetic and cultural interventions.

Other Activity: Tour: MAYA Design Group Tour and Night on the Southside
MAYA Design Group, a CHI 99 sponsor, will host a tour of its design studio on Pittsburgh's historic Southside. You will see demos of MAYA's leading-edge graphical user interface designs and information architectures, including its innovations in data visualization. Following the tour, you are invited to visit the many fine restaurants and nightspots within walking distance. MAYA will provide maps, information about each restaurant, and discount coupons.

Transportation:
Transportation will be provided by Molly's Trolleys. Trolleys depart the David Lawrence Convention Center at 6:15 pm and at 6:30 pm. One trolley will return to Downtown Pittsburgh at 8:00 pm. A second trolley will return at 10:15 pm.

Reservations:

Other Activity: ACM/SIGCHI Business Meeting
The annual ACM SIGCHI Business Meeting will be held after the last session of the day on Wednesday.

This meeting will review ongoing SIGCHI programs and activities, discuss issues affecting SIGCHI and SIGCHI's future, and answer any questions you care to raise. This meeting is open to all conference participants. Please attend!
